There was golden glory and quarter-final heartache for two of our sports stars at the London Olympics at the weekend.
Arsenal, England and Team GB striker Ellen White started her first match of the women’s football tournament at the quarter-final stage on Friday night.
But her joy at leading the line for Hope Powell’s side was shortlived as Team GB’s medal hopes were dashed by a shock 2-0 defeat to Canada.
Having beaten tournament favourites Brazil and topping their group – therefore getting the easier side of the quarter-final draw – Team GB looked a good bet for a medal.
But White was starved of service as a physical Canada side progressed to the next stage.
There was some golden glory for one of the Vale’s fantastic five at the Games, though, as rower Andrew Triggs-Hodge helped GB continue their dominance of the Men’s Fours.
The 33-year-old defending Olympic champion stroked Britain to victory alongside Oxford Blue Pete Reed, Henley’s Tom James and Leander’s Alex Gregory at Eton Dorney on Saturday.
Triggs-Hodge, who lives in Oxford, was born in Aylesbury and lived in Halton.
