As summer draws to its inevitable close a number of season-long major trophy events have also been concluding at Ivinghoe Golf Club this month.
One of the big winners so far has been the club’s treasurer Tony Hetherington, who not only won the trophy for the Summer League Match Play Championship but who also ‘cashed in’ by finishing runner-up in the season-long race to become Midweek Player of the Year, in both the stableford and medal categories.
In the final of the Summer League Match Play competition, a popular event wherein the winners of four ‘all-play-all’ mini-leagues progress to the knockout Match Play stages, Tony just edged Marcus Mitchinson 3&1 after it had seemed highly likely the match would go right down to the wire.
Runner-up Marcus had more than a little compensation himself, just six days later, when finishing with a superb net four under par, 58, to win the Tom Marston Medal, on countback, from Russell Shardlow who also carded an equally stunning four under.
In the other major Trophy event culminating this week, Sharldow and playing partner Chris James performed brilliantly in the final of the ‘S.A.H. Trophy’ to beat the notoriously formidable pairing of Jamie McKnight and Phil Elliot, by a score of 6&4.
