A teenager is on target for a high-flying career after winning a prestigious RAF scholarship.

Nick Wong, 17, is one of 25 youngsters from across the UK who will get a £1,000 bursary for academic development and the opportunity to learn about what it means to serve in today’s Royal Air Force.

The top student, from Longwick, who wants to be an aeronautical engineer in the RAF, was put through his paces at Bramley Lakes Adventure Training Centre, near Norwich.

During the week-long course, he took part in climbing, canoeing, abseiling and expedition planning exercises designed to develop team-work and leadership skills.

After successfully completing the course, part of the RAF’s Scholars Award, Nick said: “It taught me how to react in high-pressure situations.

“This course was all about teamwork and developing leadership. I think it has helped me enormously.”

The talented Aylesbury Grammar School pupil, who has won prizes for physics, biology and design technology, has already proved his leadership skills in the Air Cadets, where he has been promoted to Flight Sergeant.

Retired Wing Commander Pat Carter, who set up and helps run the courses, said: “We have the cream of the country’s young people here, and many of them will go on to have highly satisfying and successful careers in the RAF.”
