Hot on the heels of his British Grand Prix victory, Aston Clinton racer Mark Webber says the forthcoming German race is not what it used to be.
The straight-talking Aussie pulled no punches in his preview for this weekend’s race, which is at the re-designed Hockenheim circuit.
“To be honest, I much prefer the Nurburgring,” he admitted.
The old Hockenheim was a really cracking circuit, it was a flat-out blast through the forest and every time I brake for turn two on the new track I wish we continued in a straight line, on the route of the old circuit.
“There are a couple of overtaking places on the current track, particularly into the hairpin at the end of the back straight.
“But it’s not that thrilling to drive and it’s not even that technical.”
Webber is looking forward to a ‘good atmosphere’, though.
“The Germans love F1, so there’s a big following for the German drivers at this race. There are plenty of them – five – so it should be good.”
Hockenheim currently stages the German Grand Prix biennially, sharing the race with the Nurburgring.
Mark’s best result at Hockenheim is sixth, in 2004 for Jaguar.
The track was built in 1932 as a test track for Mercedes Benz.
It staged its first world championship grand prix in 1970, a race won by Jochen Rindt.
