An exhibition based on images from an iconic 90s protest against a motorway have gone on display at the Queens Park Arts Centre.
By 1994 protesters had almost entirely taken over Claremont Road in East London where they held music concerts, painted the outsides of houses and created sculptures in the road.
At the end of the year hundreds of police removed the protesters and the street was razed to the ground to make way for the M11 link road.
Artist Pat Jones, who grew up in the area and used to take her daughter down there to see what was happening, said: “Gradually as the pictures go along there’s less and less of Claremont Road until the last one, where there’s just a door- way.”
Mrs Jones, 67, of East London, was encouraged to display her work at Queens Park by her now grown-up daughter Kerry who lives in Aylesbury.
The 27-picture exhibition is called Streets Of Trees – a name which Pat says is ironic ‘because there’s no trees there’.
Pat is an established illustrator who has worked for magazines, Stratford East’s Theatre Royal and The Adult Education Service in East London.
The exhibition is on show at Queens Park Arts Centre until July 18.
