How playing rugby can do great things for kids confidence

A partially-deaf rugby mad dad wants to get youngsters excited about the sport in time for the World Cup next year.

Rob Hill, 34, played for the England Deaf Rugby team 15 times and is bringing his passion for the sport in the form Rugby Tots to Thame for the very first time.

Rob – dad to Arthur, three, and Beatrice, one – has been coaching for 14 years and is encouraging children as young as two to try it out at the Thame Leisure Centre on Saturday November 22.

Rob, who is head coach at Chinnor Colts on Sundays said: “I know it’s done wonders for my son’s confidence, so I want to pass that on to other children.”

Rugby Tots caters for children aged between two and seven in its junior, senior and advanced classes.

Little ones develop skills like balance, agility and co-ordination in parent-participating sessions – all without full body contact.

Rob, who earned the nickname Bullhead through his position as third prop, believes it is important children begin to develop social skills, and Rugby tot sessions place emphasis on sharing, taking it in turns and working together.

He said: “My disability has never held me back – anyone can give rugby a go.”

Parents can register their interest by emailing rob.hill@rugbytots.co.uk or calling Rob on 08453131908.
