Youngsters at Aston Rowant Primary School helped cut the ribbon at the opening of a brand new classroom after a year’s worth of fundraising.

The opening of the £150,000 new classroom is a milestone for the small school, which has around 90 children on roll.

The bill was footed by charity grants, kind donations and a huge effort by the school’s parents and teachers association.

Fundraising events at the school organised include a premier film night, family barbecues and various other events.

The extra space – which includes a wooden veranda – will be of huge benefit to pupils at the school in School Lane, as reception children will be able to use the veranda for safe, supervised play.

A designated library has also been installed as part of the development.

Headteacher Judith Lawson said: “This is a very exciting time for us.

“The school feels so much bigger, but it still maintains the ethos and atmosphere of a small school.”

Youngsters will now be able to worship collectively – a recommendation from the Diocese inspection – without having to move furniture.

Lunchtime can now be enjoyed in a designated area rather than children having to make do sitting at their desks – meaning classrooms stay clean for afternoon learning.

The space will also host specialist music lessons, PE sessions as well as end of year and Christmas performances.

Mrs Lawson said: “This means that children in Class 3 no longer have to live like nomads for the week before Christmas so that other classes can get into the hall to practice!”

The school currently has places available in several year groups.
