Council ‘confident’ weekend matches will go ahead

AYLESBURY Vale District Council says it is ‘confident’ sports matches across the Vale will go ahead at the weekend.

After two weeks of postponements and cancellations due to the wintry weather, the sporting calendar looks set to burst back into life with Aylesbury FC, Aylesbury Rugby Club, Aylesbury Hockey Club, the ADL and the SLN all set to return. Aylesbury United’s proposed game against Tring Athletic has been moved due to the Ducks’ landlords Leighton Town now playing on the same day.

A statement from AVDC also defended it’s decision to close pitches for the last two weeks after being criticised by some clubs.

Gareth Bird, community spaces manager at the council, said: “We understand the frustrations of some football clubs who have been unable to play on our pitches due to the severe weather conditions.

“Snow, ice and frozen pitches have created problems for the weekly fixtures list. Decisions to cancel matches are not taken lightly, and any risks to players have to be taken into account along with the condition of the pitch and any potential long-term damage to the pitch.

“Based on the latest five day forecast, we are hopeful that this weekend’s fixtures will go ahead as planned and are confident that we will not have to extend the football season to accommodate all the games.”
