A new museum which includes First World War artifacts, a Mayfly replica aircraft and a Chipmunk flight simulator has been officially opened.

Formally titled the James McCudden Air Power Centre, the museum at RAF Halton was opened by Lord Trenchard earlier this week.

Lord Trenchard was accompanied by a Guard of Honour, the Central Band of the RAF, and a Fly Past by a BE2c Replica Aircraft.

The air centre is named after engineer-turned-pilot James McCuddon, whom Lord Trenchard aptly coined ‘Britain’s most decorated pilot’ in reference to his many awards, which include the Victoria Cross, two Distinguished Service Orders, and two Military Crosses.

The centre has been built by volunteers around the country, receiving funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Rolls Royce, and the RAF Charitable Trust. It is open to the public by arrangement on request.

The Chipmunk flight simulator gives visitors the chance to experience a flight around the local area.

Contact the museum curator, Francis Hanford, on 01296 656841 to arrange a tour in advance.
