SOMETHING a little more classic is on the menu this week, with half of the renowned Coull Quartet joining the Crendon Chamber Orchestra for a winter concert.
Roger Coull, leader of the Coull Quartet, will be conducting and local resident Nick Roberts, cellist of the Coull, will feature as the cello soloist.
The Crendon Chamber Orchestra is a player-led string orchestra and works regularly with a number of music directors including Paul Barritt, Will Carslake and Sam Laughton.
Recent concerts have featured Tippett’s Concerto for Double String Orchestra, Bach’s Double Violin Concerto and Stravinsky’s ballet Apollon Musagète.
This concert is an Italy vs England match, with three composers from the early 20th century making up the England team.
John Ireland wrote Concertino Pastorale on the eve of the Second World War and its intensity reflects the tense time in which it was written. Little Music for String Orchestra, written by Michael Tippett just after the war, is an uncomplicated piece and has been compared to a Purcell Fantasia. Lady Radnor’s Suite was written by Hubert Parry for Lady Radnor.
Italy fields its red priest from the 18th century, Antonio Vivaldi, who produced a wealth of lively music, from which they have selected Sinfonia alla rustica, Cello concerto in C minor RV401 and in C major RV400.
The event will take place on February 18 at St Mary’s Church in Thame.
