There was a double success for Thame Netball Club in the first round of matches in the Aylesbury District Netball League last Wednesday.
A new look Thame Hurricanes side started their Division Four campaign with a one goal win over the Wingrave Comets last Wednesday.
The teams have a history of close results with both of last season’s encounters going right down to the wire, and this was no exception.
The Thame girls had the edge from the start, attacking well and moving the ball down the court with ease.
Wingrave kept fighting though and in the final quarter the match went goal for goal.
Hurricanes kept their cool and the advantage taking the victory by one goal 24-23.
Their next match takes place against the Cherokees on Wednesday September 25.
Meanwhile, Thame Tornadoes began their Division Three campaign with a convincing victory over the Chiltern Fliers.
Thame shook off a nervous start and took the early lead however both sides looked capable of scoring.
Chiltern’s intricate passing gave them the edge, however Thame managed to stay with them and the first quarter ended level at 6-6.
A couple of missed chances allowed Chiltern to take the lead, but a resurgent Thame flew back into action and looked like they would take a firm grip on the game. They did exactly that and went into the half-time break up 14-11.
Thame stayed in control in the third quarter as their long passing was easily opening up the Chiltern defence, enabling them to shoot at will.
This dominance allowed them to take a 23-16 lead into the final quarter.
With their opponents tiring, Thame were able to enjoy the final quarter and maintained possession well to allow them to add to their goal tally.
Their control of the game was illustrated by a comfortable winning scoreline 30-21, giving them a perfect start to the new season.
