New markings to stop parking problems near Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Double yellow lines are to be painted in residential roads near Stoke Mandeville Hospital to alleviate the area’s parking problems.

Residents and the nearby Booker Park School have long complained about hospital staff parking in the area day and night, particularly in Winterton Drive and Kynaston Avenue.

Police have stepped up their involvement following confrontations and last month two cars were towed from the area.

It is hoped the new road markings will deter people from blocking up the road.

A multi-storey car park is also due to be completed at the hospital by the start of next year to help end the problem. However, although work was due to start on the project this month, the hospital does not yet have a start date.

Ian Garlington, director of property services at the hospital trust, said: “The trust is pleased that we are continuing to progress with our plans to develop a multi-storey car park at Stoke Mandeville Hospital by the start of next year.

“When the new multi-storey is built, this will offer over 500 spaces.”

The hospital has also applied to build a temporary 553 space car park on fields next to the ambulance station.

There have been fears this may mean the permanent car is not built, but the hospital says it is to alleviate any problems while building works are carried out on the multi-storey.
