Aylesbury College has backed government GCSE reforms which mean students must study English and maths until they get a grade C or better.

The initiative was introduced this month, with education secretary Michael Gove describing English and maths as ‘the most important vocational skills a young person can have’.

College principal Karen Mitchell said: “Employers tell us how essential it is for business that our young people have good levels of English and Maths, particularly with current employment levels and the challenges the UK faces in a global market.

“By running these core subject courses alongside our vocational subjects, our students will be given the best opportunity to achieve all the qualifications they need for the working world.”
