Residents on an Aylesbury street were kept awake when contractors carried out gas pipe work overnight with noisy pneumatic drills.
Mungo Duncan, of Roblin Close, said drilling work by Southern Gas in neighbouring Lower Road as part of the ASDA development began on Saturday evening and continued throughout the night.
When he spoke to the contractors Mr Duncan was informed they may have to continue drilling until 7am today (Monday) but as it turned out the work was completed Sunday morning.
He said: “The work carried on through, 2, 3 and 4am until Sunday morning. I went out on Sunday morning and they had packed up and gone. There was absolutely no reason whatsoever they could have done that work on Sunday day when it’s quiet on that road.
“There was absolutely no necessity to carry out this work overnight. We all settled in for a fairly disturbed night. With all this work scheduled to go on the next month we would just like some assurances that we won’t get this cavalier treatment again.”
Mr Duncan said he was unhappy not to have been informed by either the utility company or county council of the work.
The council said it was the responsibility of Southern Gas to inform residents of work and on this occasion it had not. The company apologised for the inconvenience.
A council spokesman said: “With the nature of the work that was being undertaken on Lower Road, and with a lot of road works that are carried out, noise is sometimes unavoidable. We apologise for any inconvenience that this caused.
“With the location of the work close to the entrance of the hospital, the decision to carry out the work during the night over the weekend was taken to minimise any disruption to this busy entrance.
“There was also work taking place on Risborough Road and Churchill Avenue which had to be taken in to account so as not to conflict with the restrictions in place for this work.”
