Aylesbury town councillors who consistently fail to attend meetings will be thrown off committees.
The move comes after a series of meetings have had to be cancelled because not enough people turned up.
Now elected officials who fail to attend six consecutive committee meetings, or do not go for six months, will be taken off them.
They will then have a chance to request their place back, but this will have to be approved by full council, who could choose to put someone else on the committee.
Councillor Allison Harrison said: “If you can’t do it step down and let somebody else take that place so meetings and committees can be more effective.”
It was suggested at the meeting councillors with commitments to other authorities should consider whether they have taken on too much.
