A senior police officer has praised the Aylesbury community after racial tensions appear to have calmed in the past few days.
Tensions were high early last week after a 31-year-old man allegedly went on a racist rampage through the Alfred Rose Park, including knocking down an elderly Asian woman.
It was the latest in a line of worrying attacks on Aylesbury’s Muslim population since Drummer Lee Rigby was killed in a terrorist attack in London last month.
But Neighbourhood Inspector Kelly Glister said: “We’ve had nothing significant following on from things last week.
“It’s been a really positive week after a difficult start last week. I’m hoping it’s a bit of a turnaround.
“We want the town to be calm, integrated and a nice place to visit.
“We don’t want any of that nonsense. We are a really close and diverse town.
“It’s a shame that individuals have to try and spoil that with silly actions.”
Insp Glister said such a message had been well received by community leaders and people in Aylesbury.
But she urged people to still report any racist behaviour to them.
“We rely on people reporting stuff to us. At least then we can get an idea of what’s going on and if there’s any unnecessary tensions,” she added.
The 31-year-old man has been bailed until July 23 after being arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage, racially aggravated common assault and racially aggravated intentional harassment.
