When Ann Garner opened The Bucks Herald two weeks ago she did not expect to see the faces of her great grand parents staring back at her.
On our regular ‘Back in Time’ nostalgia feature with Karl Vaughan, we featured a 1905 picture of The Greyhound Hotel which once stood on the corner of Silver Street and Great Western Street, with the proprietor Edward Sturt and his wife Annie.
Mrs Garner, 80, who lives in Old Stoke Road, Aylesbury and keenly researces her family tree said: “I was so excited when I saw their names and picture in the paper. I knew they had run the Greyhound but I had never seen the photograph.”
Mr Sturt led an interesting life. He was born in London, had seven children, and a varied career working as a bank clerk, bookseller, in stationery and as a chief boatman before coming to Aylesbury in 1980 to run the pub for 23 years before returning to London, where he died at the age of 83 in 1922.
His eldest child Amy married John Dymock who ran The Baker’s Arms in Waddesdon. Their eldest child Edward (Mrs Garner’s father) became a tenant farmer in Lower Winchendon, where she was brought up.
