Firefighters were called to the house at 3.25pm yesterday (Wednesday) after the blaze broke out.
When they arrived the living room was ablaze and there was heavy smoke throughout the house.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly put out the fire and found the woman but were unable to save her.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and an investigation by the fire service and Thames Valley Police is ongoing. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
At the time of going to press the woman’s identity had not been revealed. Neighbours said a man and a woman lived in the property.
Residents along the street expressed their shock at what had happened.
One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “There were fire engines everywhere along the road. I knew the people in the house remotely but just as neighbours.”
Another neighbour said: “I knew them as neighbours and saw them on a regular basis.
“I’ve not spoken to anyone from the family yet but it’s very sad to hear what’s happened.”
The fire took hold in the middle of the day, when many people were out at work.
One resident said: “My wife and I were out at work but our son was at home. He saw three fire engines but didn’t hear anything. The fire service wouldn’t say anything to us.”
