DO you have what it takes to be a hero?
If the answer is yes then you could be just the person Oxfordshire County Council is looking for as it appeals for new retained firefighters.
Current officers will be visiting Thame in January to give out leaflets, explain what being a firefighter involves and invite people to apply for the position.
They will also visit local businesses within 1.5 miles of the station to discuss with managers the possibility of releasing staff to become retained firefighters.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will be at Thame Town Hall on Saturday January 7 2012.
Nick Bourke, station manager for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The opportunity to become a retained firefighter is open to everyone aged 18 and over.
“We are looking for people from all walks of life who would like to contribute something to their local community.
“All we ask is that they are fit and well and able to perform the role of a firefighter. Being a retained firefighter offers excellent rewards and possibilities.
“However, it will mean that they are required to be on call either during the day, night or over a weekend. I would like to encourage anyone who is interested to come along and find out more.”
A retained firefighter will be put through a rigorous training schedule spread out over a number of months. Part of the training involves learning to operate equipment used to deal with road crashes such as hydraulic cutting equipment, and how to wear and use breathing apparatus.
Oxfordshire County councillor Judith Heathcoat said: “Firefighters do such a tremendous job and if you, or someone you know, is thinking about a career in the fire service, I recommend that you pop down and meet the crews in your local area to find out how to apply and what being a retained firefighter involves.”
