After thinking they had finished third in the Southern Inter Counties Youth League, Bucks darts team players got a pleasant surprise when their manager revealed they had actually come runners-up.

Team boss Barry Jefferies broke the good news to the players and pulled out their trophies after they beat Kent to second spot on countback.

Jefferies, who helped build a successful club during the 1990s, has been lured back after an 11-year break.

And his experience has already paid dividends.

Just last season all three of the club’s teams were languishing at the bottom of their respective leagues.

To celebrate Jefferies arranged a match between his original team and the new kids on the block. Experience told as the old hands triumphed 20-10.

He said: “It was an excellent day and a great surprise for the players, none of them knew.

“It’s great to be back involved, we’ve got some excellent young players.”
