Police have made two arrests in connection with a fire which destroyed a historic train carriage.
More than 45 firefighters from eight fire stations were called to tackle the blaze at Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway, which broke out shortly after 2am on Thursday morning.
The burnt out carriage was a 1930s London Midland Scottish Railway observation coach.
The carriage was unusual because it had open compartments, which were uncommon at the time.
It also had a big window at both ends so senior engineers could watch what was happening on the track. There are only a few of the carriages left in existence.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: “The two 16-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of arson and they have been released on police bail until September 2.”
The 3.5 mile heritage railway runs from Chinnor to just outside Princes Risborough – although bosses are working with Network Rail to see if it can be extended into Princes Risborough Railway Station.
The line carries between 12,000 and 15,000 passengers each year.
The fire did not affect services on the railway, because it occured on a siding away from the main station.
