Youngsters got harvesting this week as part of a year-long allotment project at Waterperry Gardens.

A total of 27 Oakley School pupils took part, aged eight and nine.

They first planted pumpkins and sunflowers in a greenhouse on the site at the beginning of the year, and have since added other vegetables and plants.

On Wednesday the children harvested onions, potatoes, garlic and beetroot.

Class three teacher Yolanda Colucci, said: “The children enjoyed it so much.

“We harvested a few things, but sadly not as much as we usually would as a result of the weather.

“We’ve now been planting things on the school grounds as well, so we take what we learn from Waterperry Gardens and bring it back here to the school.

“It was all part of a year-long project split into four visits.”
