AYLESBURY FC boss Steve Smith believes he possesses the squad to finish in the top 10 next season.
Since taking over from Mark Eaton in October, Smith has seen the Moles unexpectedly battle against relegation.
However, after securing safety last weekend and stretching their unbeaten streak to a third game with a 1-0 win over Woodford United on Saturday, Smith believes his side ‘can go from strength to strength’.
“I’ve looked at the top 10 this season and sometimes thought ‘blimey’ we are more than capable of being up there.
“We have played well at times but we have made too many silly mistakes and gave away some sloppy goals.”
After a second consecutive clean sheet against Woodford though, FC’s defence has appeared far stronger, something Smith puts down to the presence of former Oxford United defender Andrew Gunn.
“Since we brought in Andy we have looked far more solid at the back,” Smith beamed.
“The back five have been great in the last few games.”
Despite believing he has players ‘who could easily play one or two levels higher’, Smith thinks the Moles’ recent good form may have a telling effect on his squad.
“It has been a very difficult season but credit to the guys because they have worked really hard.
“They’ve stuck it out when they could have easily jumped ship.
“Hopefully, what we’ve done recently will attract them to stay at Aylesbury.”
