THIS Sunday sees the running of the 2012 London Marathon where thousands of athletes and fun runners will take to the streets of the capital – some running in serious competition, some for charity and many for pleasure.

The number of runners has increased dramatically since the first race in 1981 where less than 8,000 participants were accepted to take part. In 2011 more than 34,000 finished the race.

As usual, there will be a band of runners from the Vale, including those from Vale of Aylesbury Athletics Club and all of whom have been working and training hard. One of the most anticipated runs will be from former Bucks Herald Spors Personality award winner Anuradha Cooray who is hoping to achieve the Olympic qualifying time of 2hrs 18mins in order to compete for Sri Lanka in August at London 2012.
