AYLESBURY United manager Tony Joyce says he wants to retain his star players so they can mount a title challenge next season.
The Ducks’ 4-0 demolition of Hillingdon Borough on Saturday saw United record their seventh win in eight games as they moved to within two points of Haringey Borough.
But Joyce believes the best is still to come.
“We have a got a great squad at the moment and in the past month we have been in championship-winning form.
“At the beginning of March we set ourselves the target of reducing the 10-point gap between us and Haringey and we have almost overtaken them now.”
Stacey Field grabbed a brace against Borough to take his tally to 25 goals for the season.
However, with the striker in sparkling form along with many of his team-mates, Joyce is naturally worried he could lose some of his best names over the summer.
“Of course, this summer there is going to be interest in one or two of our players but I would love it if we could keep the squad together for just one more season.
“Then maybe we could add one or two new faces and finally bring a trophy to Aylesbury United.”
Last season the Ducks finished sixth but Joyce believes this season the side have made genuine progress as they prepare for Haringey’s arrival this weekend.
“They are a good attacking side, like we are. But I would hope that we have enough fire power in our ranks to overcome them.”
At the time of going to press United were due to play Harefield on Tuesday night.
