HE is usually filling dancefloors and radio airwaves with his music mixing but on Saturday DJ Spoony was in Aylesbury playing for Bierton FC against Bedgrove United.
The popular former BBC Radio One presenter and Liverpool fan is the cousin of Bierton player-cum-chairman Leon Smith and has already turned out for the side a number of times before.
His appearance in centre midfield came as a boost for Bierton, who are enjoying a new lease of life after coming close to folding recently (see story, left).
There were no airs and graces when the man who made his name with the famous Dreem Team garage crew turned up at Burcott Lane.
“He was the first one to get his fiver out for his subs, there was no Billy big time or anything like that,” said Pete McGuinness, Bierton treasurer.
“He’s a lovely bloke and it’s great for the lads because he knows his stuff and they have extra enthusiasm when he turns up to play.
“The great thing is he loves it as well. He is just one of the lads, no-one pesters him or anything like that and it’s good for the club having him involved.”
Spoony, real name Johnathan Joseph, is also an avid golf fan and often combines his love of the sport and enjoyment supporting worthwhile causes by organising an annual golf tournament at Stoke Park Club in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire for The Golf Roots Foundation.
