AYLESBURY FC’s players have been given the night off from training this week as a reward for their efforts during a gruelling fixture list.

FC have played three times a week for the last month and a half and edged ever closer to manager Steve Smith’s survival target of 40 points with a win over Fleet Town at the weekend.

As a result the Moles boss has granted his players a night off, with praise ringing in their ears.

“We now fins ourselves in quite a nice position where we have a little gap,” Smith said.

“So I’ve given the boys the night off on Tuesday because it has been a tough run of games playing every few days and they’ve been brilliant.”

Smith said nobody will be resting on their laurels yet, though.

“If you look at the games we have to come and the other teams’ run-ins, you would say the pressure is on them now.

“If we win Saturday (against Biggleswade) and results go our way, we could jump three places up the league.

“Until we’re mathematically safe no-one will be resting on their laurels but we’re three points away from that magic number of 40 now and we can start to relax and enjoy our football the sooner we get there,” he added.

Smith will not be in the dugout against Biggleswade due to work commitments.

His brother James, pictured above, will be taking charge of the team in his absence.
