A LASER show above St Mary’s Church, street parties across the Vale and an appearance by the star of Hollywood film War Horse – these are just some of the events taking place to celebrate the Queens diamond jubilee.
Across the Vale there will be plenty of activities to keep families busy on the weekend of June 2 and 3 – and the two bank holidays on Monday 4 and Tuesday 5.
This week officials urged anyone who is considering organising an event to get in touch and find out about the support available to help them.
On Saturday June 2, The Buckinghamshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs is hosting The Waddesdon Country Show on the grounds of the Manor.
It will feature horse displays in a special arena, arts and crafts stalls, a farmers’ market, a home and garden section, bouncy castles and a tug of war. In Weston Turville, there will be a fun day at the village hall and on the sports field, with an emphasis on ‘local organisations joining together’.
On Sunday June 3 there will be a jubilee street party in Aylesbury’s old town, featuring live music and a fancy dress competition. Quainton is hosting ‘The Big Lunch’, a street party offering a variety of fun activities and maypole dancing. On Monday June 4 up to 5,000 people are expected to gather in Wendover for a jubilee fun day, carnival parade and ‘it’s a knockout’ tournament.
Aylesbury’s St Mary’s Church will be hosting a laser light show from its roof after a barn dance. The church had hoped to light a beacon to celebrate her Majesty’s 60th year on the throne, but chose to hold a laser show rather than having a ‘fire basket’ on the roof.
Across Bucks it is hoped a total of 60 beacons will be lit. A number of villages, including Quainton and Bishopstone, have already indicated they will be taking part.
More than 3,000 people are expected to gather by the lake in Watermead for a fun day on the Monday. There will be live music, along with performances by school pupils and community groups. Everyone taking part will be asked to think of something that involves the number 60, to help get in the spirit of the Royal occasion.
Anyone wishing to perform or sponsor the event is asked to contact the parish council.
Another highlight will be in Mursley where Joey, the actual war horse from Steven Spielberg’s epic film, is going to make a special guest appearance.
There will be a parade through the town, stalls, fairground rides, fire eaters, a fire stilt walker and live music. Joey will appear in an evening show, which will be specially created for the village by the famous Devils Horsemen stunt team.
Martin Tett, leader of Bucks County Council, said: “It is a chance to celebrate a moment in history.
“The county council, working with our colleagues in each district council will be making it as simple and inexpensive as possible to hold street parties and other celebrations across the county.”
