PREMIER League defender Emmerson Boyce is confident his Wigan side have what it takes to stave off relegation after starring in their vital 2-1 win over rivals Bolton last Saturday.
The Aylesbury-born footballer predicted a revival for his basement club ahead of the Bolton clash. And he was proved right after an imperious defensive display in what was a crucial victory.
Boyce recently admitted he would rather play badly and win games after the Latics amassed just four points from the last nine games and boasting just three wins to their name all season prior to the Bolton six-pointer.
The former Quarrendon School pupil said: “We need to start picking up the three points regularly now.
“We were getting too far behind,” the 32-year-old said.
The win over Bolton, where the Barbados captain went head to head with Wendover-born footballer Sam Ricketts, puts Wigan within touching distance of safety.
Boyce added: “We are bottom of the league and even though we were playing well we needed to start picking up results because I’d rather be playing badly and picking up the points to move us up the table.
“We have been through it many times in the last couple of years and we need to learn from it and not get cast adrift so quickly.
“But Bolton was a massive game which neither side could afford to lose and we got the win.”
