More than fifty people have been arrested during the opening week of Thames Valley Police’s Christmas anti-drink and drug drive campaign, including a 19-year-old from Aylesbury.

The man, arrested in the town on December 6 for drug-driving, is the joint youngest person arrested so far along with another 19-year-old from Slough.

A total of 2,779 people have so far been breath tested with 56 arrests.

Of those arrested, 46 were men and 10 were women with the average age of 35.

Twenty arrests have been made in Buckinghamshire, 14 in Oxfordshire and 22 in Berkshire.

Thirty-one of the 56 arrested have been charged, 17 have been released on bail pending further enquiries and eight people have been released with no further action.

This year’s campaign shows a 20 per cent decrease on the 70 arrests made during the same period in 2013.

The initiative which runs until January 1, involves police targeting individuals they suspect of driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Chief inspector for the Thames Valley roads policing unit Henry Parsons said: “People often ask us what’s the safe limit to drink and drive.

“The answer is that there isn’t one, please don’t mix the two, the consequences simply aren’t worth the risk, real people die and get injured.”
