ORGANISERS of this year’s Spirit Of Tring festival are planning to use the event to help celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.
The not-for-profit two-day show takes place on the weekend of Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. This year organisers expect to beat last year’s record crowd of 5,000 people.
Saturday’s entertainments will begin at 5pm with the winners of a talent show, followed by Soulfish who return to the festival by popular demand.
In the evening there will be a party atmosphere with headliners Cool Britania – a West End-style celebration of great British rock and pop from throughout the Queen’s 60-year reign.
On Sunday it is the turn of the English National Orchestra, which will deliver a special Queen’s diamond jubilee version of the great British proms.
Star conductor Jae Alexander will lead the orchestra through all the traditional proms classics. In the skies above, a Second World War Spitfire will perform a spectacular fly-by, choreographed in time with the music.
David Evans MBE, chairman of Grass Roots and the brains behind the festival, said: “When I gave birth to the event in 2010 it was intended to be a one-off celebration of my company’s 30th birthday. It was so well received I made the decision to do it again in 2011. It is just one part of our support for the community, support that has been running for 25 years. Can we do it again? Well, my bank balance says no, but my heart says yes! While Grass Roots generously continues to underwrite the costs of staging the event, local schools and sports clubs, will again be given the opportunity to generate much- needed funds through ticket selling and operating food and drink stalls inside the venue.”
Mick Eldridge, chairman of Tring Athletic Football Club, where the festival is taking place, said: “Tring Athletic is delighted to be hosting the Spirit of Tring again and extremely grateful for Grass Roots’ generous support, which makes it all possible. The money that we and other sports clubs are able to generate from the event enables us to continue providing such a fantastic range of sporting opportunities for the community.”
Susanna Collings, the head of Tring School, said: “How lucky we are to have a show of this quality right on our doorstep. Needless to say we will be giving it our full support once again.”
