A football mad dad hopes to raise awareness and cash for young families with muscular dystrophy by taking part in a gruelling challenge.

Martin Hywood, 40, from Aylesbury, who suffers from the condition himself is a lifelong Leeds United fan, but struggles to walk even short distances.

But in an effort to stop people saying things like “I’ve never even heard of muscular dystrophy” Mr Hywood, is walking from Holbeck Moor Park to Elland Road Stadium in Leeds, the home of his beloved club.

Mr Hywood, who suffers from limb girdle muscular dystrophy, a condition which causes muscles to weaken and waste, said: “My walk will take me far from my comfort zone, but I’d like to show family and friends that things are possible, despite the adversity that we might face. To challenge yourself and raise vital funds along the way is a good thing.”

The father of three, was diagnosed with the condition aged 23 and his older brother Simon is also a sufferer.

He said: “Since I was diagnosed I do as much as I can, including discussing this in the Houses of Parliament and lobbying against certain benefits changes. I’ve met some inspirational people along the way.”
