Aylesbury stages its very own Olympics today - for schoolchildren.

Youngsters from across the county will take part in the Sainsbury’s School Games, now in its third year, which features 14 sports across five venues.

The event is a county-wide sports festival that acts as the grand finale of a year of competitions both within and between schools.

More than 1,300 children aged between seven and 16 will take part on the day which begins with an opening ceremony at Stoke Mandevillle Stadium.

The ceremony is set to feature performances from dance troops and gymnasts as well as a race between the mascots representing the eight different school games areas.

Young athletes will also read oaths while there will be a speech from Oliver Lines, national 100 metres butterfly swimming champion.

The event is being organised by LEAP, formerly known as the Bucks & Milton Keynes Sport and Activity Partnership.

Marketing and Communications Officer Kirsty Ingham said: “My role is co-ordinating the day which includes arranging the competitions and ensuring there are enough volunteers.

“Teams have to qualify for the event and to do that they compete firstly against people from their own school, and then against children from other schools.

“The winning schools then get the chance to compete in this event.”

The teams of children compete in their chosen event with the winners awarded medals.

The day features athletics, panathlon (a multisport disability event), swimming and badminton at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.

Aylesbury Tennis Club hosts tennis and table tennis.

Girls football, tag rugby and touch rugby take place at Fairford Leys Playing Fields.

Rounders, netball and cycling will be held at Bedgrove Park while hockey and tri-golf are being held at Meadowcroft Astroturf.
