The health trust in charge of Stoke Mandeville Hospital which came under fire for poor staffing levels is to invest £5million in new nurses.

Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust will create an extra 150 nursing posts across the trust, in an effort to rely less heavily on agency staff.

Chief nurse Lynne Swiatczak said: “We want to deliver the best possible care for all our patients.

“This additional investment will mean that we have above the recommended number.

“I know that having more nurses on the ward will ease pressure on our hardworking staff so that they can spend more time delivering the compassionate aspects of care.”

The trust was placed in special measures last summer after the release of a damning report into standards – with low staffing and poor morale cited as a major concern.

Professor Swiatczak added: “We are committed to attracting and retaining the best nursing talent and are actively recruiting to fill these new nursing posts.

“Before Christmas we recruited 70 nurses and a further 90 nurses will be starting employment with the trust by April.”

The trust is holding recruitment days in the coming months where potential staff can find out more.

The dates are:

Saturday February 22: Staff nurse open day at the Post Graduate Centre, Stoke Mandeville Hospital. 10am til 3pm.

Monday, February 24: Treatment centre open day, Chilterns Medical Education Centre, Wycombe Hospital. 10am til 3pm.

Saturday, March 1: Medical ward open day, Post Graduate Centre, Stoke Mandeville Hospital. 10am til 3pm.

Thursday, March 13: Theatres open day, Wycombe Hospital, 10am until 3pm
