Tom Wood was remembered before Chinnor Firsts took to the field on Saturday with a memorial game in his honour.
Tom died unexpectedly at the age of 37 in November and more than 40 former Chinnor players took part in the exhibition game before 130 enjoyed a lunch in the clubhouse.
The match was won by a Chinnor Old Boys side who triumphed 15-10 against Old Thamensians.
Jake Buckland, 20, who played along side his father and scored the winning try in the final minute, said the game was competitive but played in a great spirit.
He said: “Tom came to my dad’s 50th and he was a good family friend.
“You could tell how much it meant to everyone.
“Both teams huddled at the start for a rendition of Sweet Caroline but there were definitely some old rivalries reignited during the match.
“In the last five minutes, all the subs came on the pitch too so it was a bit of a free for all and I got a bit lucky to score.”
Both squads stayed on to watch the current crop be edged out 21-20 by Shelford, who scored with the final play of the game.
Tries from Will Millett, Joe Pickett, Joe Marston and a 20-9 lead were not enough for Chinnor whose ill-discipline in the latter stages cost them a victory.
Boss Matt Goode said: “We let ourselves down in the last 20 minutes with some naive play.
“We played some outstanding rugby but our penalty count let us down.”
The Villagers travel to Redruth on Saturday (2.30pm KO), who are one point and one place behind 11th-placed Chinnor in National Division Two South.
