A lawyer representing 60 victims of paedophile Jimmy Savile believes numerous separate inquiries are in danger of missing the true extent of his crimes.
Lawyer Alan Collins has called for one judge-led inquiry into why Savile, described as Britain’s most prolific paedophile by police, evaded justice for so long.
The DJ, who died in 2012, is accused of molesting nurses and patients at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he spearheaded fundraising for the spinal injuries centre.
Mr Collins told the BBC: “We have a number of inquiries under way at the moment, at least a dozen.
“We have got the BBC being investigated, the NHS, various hospitals, and we have the police and Crown Prosecution Service.
“The concern is, whilst individually they may do an excellent job - reports will come out and will no doubt be extremely useful, the fact is that those who are investigating are not necessarily benefiting from the other investigations, so they are all doing their own thing.
“The victims feel that an opportunity may be lost because we really do need to know not just about the extent of Savile’s offending but about how and why - how was Savile able to abuse so many children and young people over so many decades?”
The BBC is currently holding an independent inquiry, led by Dame Janet Smith, who is due to publish its findings later this month, while the NHS is holding several investigations.
