More than 50 people in Oxfordshire have been arrested in a police crackdown on drink-driving over Christmas.
The campaign, which is running until the January 1, will see police targeting people they suspect of driving under the influence of drink or drugs, both on the way home from nights out and the morning after a heavy night.
Across the Thames Valley, 207 people had been arrested between December 1 and 22 as part of the ‘Is it worth the risk?’ campaign, with 34 of these caught in the morning.
In total, 55 people have been arrested in Oxfordshire during this period.
Chief Inspector Henry Parsons said: “It’s worrying that some people are still making the wrong choices, deciding to drink and drive when there are alternatives available.
“Drink driving is dangerous and it kills or seriously injures many people each year, devastating families.
“I’m grateful for the public support for this campaign that has helped us to be in the right places, at the right times to make these arrests.
“We’ll continue to target drink drivers every single day of the year, not just during campaign periods. It isn’t worth the risk.”
Of the other arrests, 73 have been made in Berkshire and 79 in Buckinghamshire.
In total, 69 men and 38 women have been arrested so far, a 10% increase in men and a 24% decrease in women compared to last year.
In total, 114 of the arrested people have been charged, with 36 bailed and 30 released with no further action.
