Aylesbury Vale’s police chief has called on a shoplifter who broke an elderly woman’s leg to hand himself in.

The thief was trying to steal three bottles of whisky from Tesco in Tring Road when he knocked over several people as he ran out of the store, including a woman in her 80s.

Vale commander, Supt Olly Wright, said the crook was ‘reckless and showed a lack of care’.

The woman was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, while a second person was treated for minor facial injuries.

Mr Wright said: “One of the elderly victims sustained a broken femur and I am anxious to get this man identified and arrested.

“This incident has had a huge impact on the families of the victims.

“The offender’s clothing and trainers were fairly washed out.

“This incident took place at a busy place, people may have seen him running out the store and I would like to appeal to anyone who knows or recognises this man to come forward and contact the police via the 101 number.

“I would also like to make a direct appeal to the offender.

“Hand yourself in, you entered the premises intending to attempt to steal alcohol but this went horribly wrong and you may not have intended to hurt anyone.

“I urge you to hand yourself in or if anyone knows this individual to please contact us to give the families peace of mind.”

The incident happened at about 10.50am on Monday.

The offender is white, around 6ft tall, in his early 20s with an Eastern European accent.

He was wearing a black beanie hat, a white top, a dark waist length jacket, light grey trousers, dark grey plimsoll trainers with a white sole and was carrying a black rucksack.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 and ask for PC Ben Dyke.

Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
