A man was arrested after an incident at the Lloyds bank in Aylesbury where refurbishment work is taking place.

Police were called at 12.28pm on Saturday after reports of a man refusing to leave the Market Square building, which is closed to the public ahead of Wednesday’s re-opening.

Builders who were inside the building at the time called the police.

The man, a 32 year old from Aylesbury, was asked to leave by officers but refused and was arrested.

Crowds gathered outside the building as the scene unfolded.

An eyewitness who works at a nearby shop said: “Word went around that there was something going on at the bank and a big crowd gathered outside.

“The police were there and people were saying someone had tried to rob the bank, which – once we saw the police taking the person away – we thought was hilarious as it is just full of workmen doing the refurb.”

Police said the incident was not an attempted robbery.

The man was arrested on suspicion of using threatening words and/or behaviour and preventing a constable from carrying out their duties.

He has been released on bail until November 1.
