She started baking cakes as a hobby, but now one Wendover lady has been nominated in three categories at a national awards for doing what she loves the most.
Lindy Smith, 49, runs Lindy’s Cakes Ltd, which is based on Station Approach in Wendover.
She started devoting her life to baking when she became a parent, and now she runs classes, has written books and produced DVDs.
Now she has been nominated for the National Mumpreneur Awards in the Best Online Business, Best Interactive Business and Best International Trader categories as well as the Inspirational Business Mum Award.
She said: “Never in my wildest dreams did I think the business would grow into what it is today.
”It started with me making cakes for my children and friends, and now it has reached the stage whereby 30% of my sales are overseas to countries such as the United States, Australia and Germany.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be nominated and to get recognised for what I do.”
Lindy admitted that juggling work and parental life was not always easy.
She said: “Often during the holidays I would work in the morning and spend the afternoon with the children.
“Even during term time, I always tried to be at home for when my children came home from school, but sometimes you do get a bit torn between the two.”
Lindy added that she was now using social media to promote the business even wider.
She said: “I really enjoy being able to interact with people, discuss things and share ideas, which I now do through my Twitter and Facebook pages.”
Lindy said she sought a lot of advice with the business in the early stages of its development and she added she would advise other women to do the same.
She said: “Initially, I had training with the Athena Network, one of the big women’s business networking organisations in this country.
“I also had a lot of support from Business Link and being able to talk to other women who owned businesses made me realise what was possible and what I could achieve.”
