Thrive, the charity that helps people with disabilities transform their lives using gardening, is looking to bring people together for indoor gardening sessions in Thame, where they can meet new people, make friends and pick up gardening tips.

Called Sow and Grow, the programme is free to people aged 50 and over who may be feeling a bit low, lonely or who have a disability, whether that’s temporary or permanent.

The eight week programme starts on February 20, lasts for two hours a week at Thame Library and all materials and tools are provided, along with tea and coffee. The programme is based around gardening activities on a table using Thrive’s tools and techniques. People who attend do not need to know anything about gardening, but may be curious to find out more.

Sow and Grow officer Isla Goldsmith, said: “Gardening offers a range of tasks, and irrespective of age or ability can support people in reaching their goals.

“People will feel better physically as gardening is a form of exercise which can be used in rehabilitation, rebuilding strength after an accident or illness.

“It can improve psychological health and for those who garden in a group there can be additional positive effects on their self esteem and self worth.

“There is also the social benefits; people make new friends and often will improve their social and communication skills.”

Sow and Grow is run by Thrive at venues across Hampshire, Berkshire and South Oxfordshire and has been funded by the Big Lottery through its Reaching Communities programme.
