THE supermarket chain planning to build a controversial new store in the centre of Thame says it has had a positive response from its most recent consultation.

More than 2,100 households and businesses responded to a recent consultation regarding the proposed Sainsbury’s on the Cattle Market site.

Following feedback from an initial consultation in March, Sainsbury’s responded by altering the proposal to cater for some of the suggestions.

An updated brochure and feedback form was sent to more than 14,500 households last month to explain the plans. According to Sainsbury’s, a total of 53 per cent of those that responded by the deadline either supported or tended to support a new store on the Cattle Market site.

Some 45 per cent objected or tended to object and the remaining two per cent were bland or spoiled.

Andrew Sanderson, development executive at Sainsbury’s, said: “A large proportion of people are currently travelling out of the area to undertake their main food shop and a new store would help to give people more choice and retain more shoppers in the town.”
