Celebrations have been taking place at a Thame charity bookshop after its sales passed the £2 million milestone.

The Oxfam store in Cornmarket surprised unsuspecting shopper Craig Lambert last week by announcing that his purchase had taken them past the magic mark.

Staff had been building up to the total with a window display letting people know they were nearly there.

For being the lucky one to push them over the line, Mr Lambert received a copy of An Innkeeper’s Diary by John Fothergill and a tea for two voucher at Thame’s Spread Eagle Hotel, where the author was once landlord.

Store manager Dick Jennens said: “He came in completely unknowingly and I knew that was the sale, so I said ‘congratulations, you’ve won tea for two’.

“He seemed quite surprised by it all.”

The Oxfam store has been open in Thame for 12 and a half years.

It took seven years to get to the first £1 million, with the second arriving in much less time.

Mr Jennens said the sales were reassuring for the future of the store.

He said: “A lot of it is down to our donors.

“We get some really good books donated by people.

“We always seem to have an interesting range of books and they’re good quality, too.

“A lot of first hand book stores all tend to be promoting the same new titles.

“Where we are different is we never know what we are going to get donated in the course of a day.

“It could be hundreds of years old or a really interesting subject.”
