A teacher who was ‘more of a friend’ to several generations of students has died.

Colin Brookes, 73, taught biology and was a boardmaster at Lord Williams’s School for more than three decades until 1993. He passed away last week from natural causes.

Colleague and close friend Susan Smith said: “He was a lovely man.

“He was a very generous man and very good friend.

“It was a privilege to know him. We had a lot of boys come to us who had difficult backgrounds or had parents in the Forces. We were the only parents they had.

“He was a very good friend to generations of young men. He was more like a father to some of those young men.”

Mr Brookes did not marry or have children.

He was also known for his commitment to helping stage productions at the school which included the likes of La Vie Parisienne and Salad Days.

His passion for music and the arts was reflected in how he taught biology.

Mrs Smith added: “He had no time for chemistry or physics.

“He used to say biology was an art.”
