Technical college on course for opening

A pioneering £10 million technical college has said it has recruited 75% of its target student rate ahead of opening in September.

Bucks University Technical College is one of 12 planned across the country, and will specialise in teaching ICT and construction while working alongside partners such as high-tech firm Cisco and developers Taylor Wimpey.

Located on the site of Aylesbury College, the new building is now weathertight with classroom walls up and floors being put in.

Principal Bev Flanagan said: “We are on track with all our targets to meet the opening of Bucks UTC in September.

“We have some wonderful young people already enrolled (125 in total) who are looking forward to starting a very exciting path. The employer projects are all taking shape nicely and it is fantastic to have such wonderful support from all our sponsors.”

The technical college, for 14 to 19 year olds, plans to take a workmanlike approach to study with school days set to run from 8.30am to 5pm and longer terms.

It is also holding a heritage skills event on May 31 at Hartwell House for potential students interested in craftmanship.
