Aylesbury’s new mayor is relishing the chance to represent the town, despite admitting that he doesn’t seek the limelight.
District and town councillor Steve Patrick, 59, took over from Ranjua Takodra MBE in a ceremony at Aylesbury College after previously acting as her deputy.
The Liberal Democrat said: “I’m absolutely pleased with the job. I feel like I’ve been in the job for quite some time already.”
The Oakfield councillor said he was surprised to be recommended for the role after retiring from Amersham and Wycombe College where he worked for more than 30 years.
“Being mayor is not something I ever considered doing or something I sought,” he said.
“I’m not the most social of persons. I don’t seek the limelight. People are so open and willing to talk though. It’s a lot easier than I thought it would be.”
The former town council leader said he enjoyed the variety the job brings with it, too.
He said: “It’s so varied, it’s incredible. I have got this ambassadorial role for Aylesbury at all times.
“It says I am the first citizen of Aylesbury and that brings a lot of responsibility with the role and a different take on things.”
Mr Patrick said he was thrilled to be meeting community groups who were doing their best for Aylesbury.
He likes that the role is apolitical.
“All the groups I have met over the last year are doing things for the benefit of the town,” he added.
Mr Patrick, who has been a district councillor since 1999, said his primary target would be to ensure all the communities of Aylesbury Vale feel involved and that people and groups do not feel isolated.
