A parish council has slammed potential plans to build an airport just five miles from Aylesbury as ‘unreasonable and unfair’.
Heathrow Airport Holdings is said to be exploring 10 options for its expansion, including an airport in Haddenham which would see Long Crendon and Chearsley completely destroyed.
Haddenham is already the location of a Second World War glider airfield and the plans would include four runways if they went ahead.
And parish council vice-chairman David Truesdale slammed the prospective idea.
He said: “Naturally we are horrified as anybody would be. There’s not much we can say.
“It’s come out of the blue for us. I would prefer if experts didn’t play games with communities. It’s unreasonable and it’s unfair.
“They have caused so much concern. We’re very concerned about the manner in which this has been made public.
“People are going to be really worried about this. I imagine we have been selected no doubt because of our proximity to a major motorway and a major rail link plus a well operating Chiltern Railways service.”
Thame MP John Howell said: “The idea of an airport being built just two miles from Thame is extremely alarming and I expect that a large number of my constituents will be as appalled as I am by the alleged contents of the report.
“This is an inappropriate location for an airport; far from where it is needed and half way to Birmingham airport. I will be monitoring developments very closely and will oppose attempts to build the airport here.”
In 1971 there were fierce protests at proposals to introduce an airport in Cublington, which were eventually dropped.
The Airports Commission, launched last November, is due this year to report assessments and recommendations to improve airport capacity in the next five years, but no long term decisions are expected until after the general election in 2015.
