Warning over phone scam in Thame

A Thame man is hoping he can prevent a mobile phone scam from claiming any more victims.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous for fear of being targeted again, said he received three Sony Xperia Z phones via courier delivery.

After unwittingly signing for them he received a call from the fraudsters claiming to be the couriers who said they had been delivered to the wrong address.

But the man says had he returned the phones to them, they would then be used to rack up large phone bills which he would have to pay.

He said: “There was a gentleman in front of me at the police station reporting the same thing when I went.

“If I handed them over I would have lost control of them. The phone bills could have gone through the roof. They could be ringing Afghanistan, America, Australia, wherever.”

The man said he had sent an email to friends about the scam and had already prevented people in Marlow and Bedford from being conned.
