£5m to build social housing in Vale villages

Social housing is to replace under-used garages in Vale villages as part of a £5 million scheme.

The Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust says around 200 people could be housed in 70 homes on its 2,198 garage sites around the district.

Many of the garages have stood empty for years while people eligible for rural housing have had to wait for somewhere to live.

Matthew Applegate, the trust’s chief executive, said: “Where developing will provide a greater benefit to a community than retaining the garages, we have put together a sympathetic planning application.

“I hope that local residents will see the benefit and get behind the developments that we believe preserve the integrity of the village environment, while making much-needed affordable housing available for local families.

“We anticipate that some people will want to raise an objection to developments of this kind. But there is no getting away from the urgent need for affordable rural housing around the Vale.”
