A food science student has been honoured for scoring top marks at university.

Sophie Guy is in the top 1% of students at Reading University and was congratulated by its chancellor Sir John Madejski at an awards ceremony.

Sophie, from Aston Abbotts, said she was delighted to be recognised with the award.

The 21 year old added: “Food is a huge part of everyone’s life and working in the food industry is a great way to make a lot of people happy.

“I am passionate about good quality ingredients and food products and enjoy learning about everything surrounding food knowing that soon I will be able to apply my understanding of the science of food to,
potentially, the global community.”

She said her highlight of 2011/12 was working in Australia alongside a local beef-cattle farmer.

Nearly 70 students gathered for the 2012 Chancellor’s Award Ceremony which was hosted by Sir John, an entrepreneur who founded Auto Trader and is currently Chairman of Reading Football Club.

Sir John said: “The University of Reading was ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide this year so it is very fitting that we recognise our top 1% students.

“The University of Reading is committed to rewarding and celebrating talent, hard work and achievement across its student community.

“Sophie is representative of our brightest and best students from across the University’s broad range of academic disciplines.

“We are extremely proud to be able to showcase such an inspiring group of individuals.”
